It’s always tough to determine which foods are good for your health and which can cause risks in the future. People prefer different foods according to the location they live in, weather they experience, and the traditions and culture that has been instilled in them. Nowadays, we are able to find numerous varieties of foods in our local markets, which is good, right? Turns out, while the amount of food available to us is increasing, the quality of the food may be decreasing. There are various unhealthy foods that have become normalized parts of our diet. Though it is alright to eat the following foods in moderation, one should always remain cautious of them.
Fried, Grilled, and Broiled Food
Frying, grilling, and broiling are some of the unhealthiest cooking methods. Foods made using these processes are highly palatable and calorie-dense. Foods cooked under this extreme heat also contain many types of unhealthy chemicals like acrylamides, acrolein, heterocyclic amines, oxysterols, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). These chemicals can cause cancer and heart diseases, making it important to avoid them as much as possible.
In the modern diet, added sugar is one of the worst and most dangerous parts of everyday eating. Liquid calories are not registered by your brain as food, so people often end up drastically increasing their calorie intake without even realizing it. When people consume these drinks in large proportions, the added sugar can drive insulin resistance in the body. Furthermore, these drinks can lead to fatty liver diseases, type 2 diabetes, and heart diseases.
Cookies, Cakes, and Pastries
Consuming an excess amount of pastries, cookies, and cakes is extremely unhealthy for the human body. This is because packaged foods are generally made with refined wheat flour, sugar, and added fats, which all pose health risks. They also sometimes contain unhealthy trans fats that provide little benefits other than improved taste. People must acknowledge that these foods might be tasty, but they simultaneously contain copious calories and almost no essential nutrients.
French Fries and Potato Chips
Potatoes are best consumed boiled, not fried. While potatoes are very healthy, the products made from them, like french fries and potato chips, are very high in calories and often increase body weight. These foods include large amounts of acrylamides, which are carcinogenic substances that form when potatoes are fried, baked, or roasted.
Unfortunately, one of our favorite desserts, ice cream, is completely loaded with sugar. The main ingredient in ice cream is dairy like milk and milk powder. These dairy products are high in calories and often are present in excess amounts in ice cream. However, ice cream can be consumed in moderation without disturbing your normal calorie intake. Alternatively, you can prepare your own ice cream using fresh fruits and a limited amount of sugar.
Chocolates and Candies
Candy bars and chocolates are incredibly unhealthy. Chocolates are high in sugar, processed fats, and refined wheat flour and are very low in essential nutrients. Overconsumption of these delicacies can also cause oral problems and affect your blood sugar level.
More often than not, fruit juices are loaded with added sugar. Though juice contains some beneficial antioxidants and Vitamin C, the excess amount of liquid sugar dominates the benefits of the beverage. Fruit juices should be considered as occasional supplements, not an everyday part of your diet, in order to maintain a balanced and healthy life.
